Dual diagnosis treatment plan: How to tackle two conditions together
Diagnosis simply means that a person is suffering from two issues at once, and their origin remains the same. It can reflect that a substance abuse issue has also brought up a psychiatric illness along with it. It can lead to depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety or psychosis. The two issues often feed into each other and that is why just treating one is not the answer. Dr. Gorav Gupta, our senior psychiatrist in Delhi with over four decades of experience is an expert and dual diagnosis and builds one team and one plan specialised for you.
Who can consider this treatment?
- People who are constantly involved in drugs and are experiencing mood issues like anxiety, perceptual distortion, and depression
- People who feel that their substance use has become worse and different kind of experiences are happening with them around mental health
- Families who want to look for answers for both problems for the loved one
Signs to consider
- When a person starts relying on drugs and alcohol to treat their low mood and extensive worry
- There are certain changes that occur after drinking has one of explicitly observable
- When relapse occurs, because one issue was treated, and the other one was neglected
- Withdrawal or intoxication that is hard to tell apart from illness
How is the assessment carried out?
The first consultation is all about understanding how the substance use has affected the person and what are the mental health symptoms around it. We look into what was the substance being used, how much it has affected the person’s mind and body, and what are the symptoms they are currently showing. After understanding all of the concerns around it, we look into a treatment plan for them, which is communicated to them instantly. If in withdrawal, some questions are asked again to understand how things came along the last time and what is to be done differently.
Treatment plan
Usually, patients are treated in an outpatient setting. Disconnect wall medication, therapy and regular reviews of the condition. We also take family sessions to strengthen the bond and build a therapeutic relationship between the family and the loved ones. Admission is considered as an option when the person is a threat to people around them or to themselves. Read when admission is needed.
Time duration for the treatment
For the treatment to kick in, it is totally dependent on how the person responds to that particular treatment plan. As experts, we keep adjusting the specifics around every small thing and help the clients understand for to watch for, how to tackle with issues and make them understand their condition better.
Family involvement
Families are involved at a very crucial level. They are the ones who noticed things first and help us understand the whole scenario behind the condition. They look into the treatment plans very effectively and the clients support them during the recovery journey.
FAQ
What is dual diagnosis?
Double diagnosis means that a person has two conditions that exist during the same time. They both are psychiatric and addiction related conditions and are very codependent on each other. A simple example can be alcohol, dependence and depression.
Do both conditions need to be treated at the same time?
Yes. Since one has root in the other, the best course of treatment is to make a plan that tackles both the issues together.
Do I need to be admitted?
Not necessary. Many people are treated as outpatients. But whether admission is needed or not depends upon the severity of your condition and how well you can manage it outside.
